# The Casefile of Jay Moriarty ## Posts - [Abstraction](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/interlude06/): “Was it all girls?” Sebastian asked. “Before me, I mean.” - [Endgame](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m9_epilogue/): “Yes. A most unusual case, overall.” Sherlock put his elbows on the table and steepled his fingers. “It almost has the cadence of a chess match.” - [Find the Lady](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m9_chapter05/): The van’s route mostly wound through city streets, which would hopefully make it easier to spot—and evade—any potential pursuers. Traffic was light, but the driver still seemed nervous any time he had to idle at a light or a crossing; his anxiety was contagious, and John found himself suspiciously eyeing the pavements and cross streets around them. - [Punishment](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m9_chapter04/): Moran made a low, breathless sound, staring down at Jay’s hand. Jay followed his gaze; the smouldering tip of the cigarette had landed just a hair’s breadth from the skin between Moran’s thumb and forefinger. - [Red vs Blue](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m9_chapter03/): “I have insufficient facts to construct a theory,” Sherlock replied. There was a certain intensity to the statement, as if he were reminding himself more than anyone else. “Or perhaps too many facts, of too little significance.” - [Tuesday](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m9_chapter02/): Less fashionable and affluent than the city’s other private clubs, the Bagatelle lacked air conditioning but made up for it with a lovely shaded courtyard—and, as a concession to the heat, the club’s regular poker game had been moved outside. Sebastian volunteered to deal, as that made it easier to cheat. - [August](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m9_chapter01/): A pair of slippers propped up on the arm of the sofa confirmed the presence of John’s flatmate; over the dull roar of street noise he could just make out the sound of long, thin fingers plucking idly at the strings of a very expensive violin. - [New Story: “The Illusive Consultant”](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/release_moriarty09/): Once again, Jay Moriarty and Sebastian Moran find themselves entangled with cat burglar John Clay — and if things couldn't get any worse, the world's greatest consulting detective has just picked up their trail ... - [Preorder: "The Illusive Consultant"](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/preorder_moriarty09/): The ninth story in The Casefile of Jay Moriarty, titled "The Illusive Consultant," comes out on November 11! - [Discipline](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/interlude05/): Sebastian’s Saturday night had effectively started with him naked on his knees at the foot of his own bed, hands held behind his back because Jay had ordered him to keep them there. - [Witching Hour](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/interlude04/): Sebastian’s body was a vague outline in the dark; he didn’t answer, but after a second or two made another sound, low in his throat, and shifted uneasily beneath the covers. He was having a nightmare. - [The Bezzle](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m8_chapter05/): Then he’d tailed Moriarty to that restaurant, and seen him with the man from the photos: Sebastian Moran. And Jay had kissed him. - [Collision Course](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m8_chapter04/): Heavy footsteps sounded through the flat, moving in from the rear of the building. Furniture scraped against the floor; something heavy fell with a loud thud. The flat was being tossed. - [The Convincer](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m8_chapter03/): On the horizon was a wide stretch of land dotted with the flat, bulky shapes of massive grey buildings; it was one of the biggest film and television production studios in the world. - [Agency](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m8_chapter02/): Apparently satisfied they were alone, Moran returned to where Woodley was huddled on the sofa. He crouched to meet Woodley’s eyes. “I’m here to talk about the men you sent after Kitty Winter.” - [Waylaid](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m8_chapter01/): Kitty Winter hadn’t been sure whether to attend the grand reopening of the Marigold Cinema until it was announced the evening’s screening would be a double feature: Body Heat and Serial Mom. - [New Story: "Sebastian Moran Gut-Punches a Pimp"](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/release_moriarty08/): As Moriarty and Moran set out to dismantle exploitative agency Wayward Talent, an old enemy of Moriarty's resurfaces. - [Preorder: "Sebastian Moran Gut-Punches a Pimp"](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/preorder_moriarty08/): The eighth story in The Casefile of Jay Moriarty, titled "Sebastian Moran Gut-Punches a Pimp," comes out on July 1! - [Fifth of November](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/interlude03/): From what Jay had heard, people who’d been in war zones tended not to enjoy fireworks all that much—especially when those fireworks were going off randomly in their neighbourhoods. Moran hadn’t said anything about it, but their relationship (for lack of a better word) wasn’t exactly at the trauma-sharing stage. - [Handbasket Express](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m7_chapter05/): All semblance of order vanished in a matter of seconds. The hostages stampeded from the great hall, Paul’s crew helpless to stop them—not that they were paying much attention, caught up as they were in their own panic. - [Acceleration](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m7_chapter04/): There were multiple different developments for Jay to process all at once, yet one thought screamed above the rest: Sebastian was bleeding. - [Call to the Post](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m7_chapter03/): “There is nothing funny,” Sebastian said solemnly, “about the words ‘priest hole.’” - [Charlie Foxtrot](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m7_chapter02/): There was just the one exit, and a severe shortage of places to hide. Sebastian only had about half an excuse formulated when Jay grabbed him by the shoulders; Sebastian’s back hit the row of lockers with a metallic rattle and thud. Instinct briefly took over, muscles tensing to fend off the attack—but Jay’s body against his was by now a familiar sensation, and the sense of threat evaporated. Especially once Jay’s mouth sealed over his. - [The Gala](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m7_chapter01/): As they handed their invitations over at the door, though, Jay was seized by the sudden conviction that it wouldn’t be enough; the doorman would take one look at him and know, immediately, that no version of Jay Moriarty belonged in a place like this. But he was with Moran—Eton and Oxford, son of an ambassador, former SAS officer Sebastian Moran, who could go just about anywhere he pleased. Which was exactly why Jay had asked for his help. - [New Story: "Moriarty & Moran Contribute to Community Welfare"](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/release_moriarty07/): The Barrie Children's Hospital is holding its annual fundraising gala, and as usual all of Britain's brightest luminaries are invited. This year, however, there are two extra guests: former SAS operator Sebastian Moran and his criminal partner, Jay Moriarty. - [Basilisk](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m6_chapter05/): “Near as I can tell, about seventy-two hours ago, Basilisk went off the rails — seizing control of other systems, ignoring all user inputs. It was rewriting its own code, faster than any of Thinkt’s engineers could counter. So they panicked — tried to shut it off. Kill it. But Basilisk managed to find an outside network connection. It escaped.” - [Going Rogue](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m6_chapter04/): “Some of it is stupidity, but some of it’s advertising. If you’re the kind of person who thinks all publicity is good publicity, there’s no better publicity than telling everyone your product might kick off the apocalypse.” - [Blood in the Water](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m6_chapter03/): AlgoDV had been his latest manoeuvre to keep Hodgson from poaching all the choice bits of Wallis’ portfolio for herself. Policy-wise, it was a silver bullet: cost-cutting, forward-thinking, and it played beautifully in contrast to the press disaster brought about by Hodgson’s botched handling of children’s services. Now, though, Wallis had the horrible suspicion it was about to become an anchor round his neck. - [Passing the Buck](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m6_chapter02/): Their visit to the police station was short and unfruitful. According to the desk sergeant, Brandon Tyler’s release was “in accordance with standard procedure” — as was their failure to inform Julia he’d been set loose. Wherever Sebastian went, police were all more or less the same: they put most of their effort into the bits of their job that were easy, and did their best to ignore anything that happened to be difficult. - [Emergency Contact](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m6_chapter01/): In hindsight, he should’ve guessed Moran’s knife-work would be impeccable. The remainder of his culinary skill, however, was still a mystery. The man’s well-established poshness more or less ruled out the possibility that he’d learned as a child, and Jay had doubts that there were cooking classes on the curriculum at Sandhurst — although, admittedly, he hadn’t checked. - [Anytime You Like](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/interlude02/): Despite twelve years in the Army and an active social life, Sebastian had never seen this many cocks in one place before. That they were all made of silicone and currently in a bag was a minor detail. “Why do you have so many of these?” - [The Hurrah](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m5_chapter05/): “What you are,” Stepan snarled at her, “is a coddled, spoiled brat who has never faced a real challenge in her life. Everything you have—everything—was handed to you because of me. And when you’re found at the bottom of this pretty, expensive staircase with a broken neck, none of your famous friends, none of your stupid things, will have mattered one bit.” - [Turnabout](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m5_chapter04/): Kira cut in again; the words “insurance investigator” caught Sebastian’s attention, followed by: “Bad enough we had to clean up a body—” - [How Jay Got to the Safe House](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m5_chapter03/): He’d paid particular attention to the door when he designed this place. It was near-impenetrable, difficult to cut through and difficult to pick open. But not impossible, because Moran didn’t have a key. And if this wasn’t Moran, there wouldn’t be much Jay could do about it. - [The Greuze Job](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m5_chapter02/): The roof was their only way in, as the gallery had just wrapped up a three-year renovation which included a full upgrade of its security measures. There were perimeter sensors on all the doors and windows, and rolling steel shutters over every potential point of access—except one. - [The Call](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m5_chapter01/): “I need you.” The words were rushed and stumbling. “Help me.” - [The Scientific Method](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/interlude01/): Jay didn’t like Sebastian touching his chest. They’d established that early on, and Sebastian hadn’t questioned it since. But here they were nearly two months post-surgery, and already something was different—the way Jay carried himself, the way he moved. There was an ease to it that wasn’t there before. Hence, the experiment. - [Four Days Later](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m4_epilogue/): The Reina was a two-star hotel near the heart of Marbella’s Old Town. Its rooms were small, its amenities limited, and the air conditioning barely worked. Jay considered it a vast improvement over the Serenidad—especially since the television in their room was an old-fashioned CRT model and dumb as a brick. - [Plan M](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m4_chapter05/): Up until now, Sebastian had been confident he could pull off a vault heist on a moment’s notice; it occurred to him now, for the first time, that he was slightly too drunk to be attempting this. - [The Target](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m4_chapter04/): Moran settled into character immediately: the baffled boyfriend, too drunk to keep his voice down. “What did I do this time?” A few of the other guests glanced their way. “One minute you’re all over me, the next you’re pushing me away—what do you want from me?!” - [Zone Surveillance](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m4_chapter03/): Sebastian went back to sifting through his emails. The bathroom door closed, the muffled noise of the shower drifting through. He was halfway through a careful reply to Milverton Analytics’ inquiry about a consult when a loud thump resounded from inside the bathroom. - [Panopticon](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m4_chapter02/): Jay was sitting upright, the top half of the bed folded up to support him. He was wearing a medical binder; from what he’d told Sebastian, it was meant to keep the swelling down and encourage his chest muscles to heal properly. There were two plastic bulbs—surgical drains—clipped to the bottom of the binder, attached to long tubes that emerged from a pair of small incisions under his arms. At the sight of Sebastian, Jay’s face split into an uncharacteristically wide smile. “Hi.” - [Three Weeks Later](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m4_chapter01/): Another Brit. They must’ve all come in on the same flight. When Niki was a little girl in Greece, she’d thought the British were polite and sophisticated; just a few years in the hotel business had relieved her of that notion. - [Tech Support](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m4_prologue/): Thanks to a series of overenthusiastic house-warming gifts, Sebastian owned two cast-iron Dutch ovens. His less favourite of the two currently contained his phone, its lid sealed in place with a generous amount of duct tape. He tucked it under his arm to free up a hand as he opened the door for Jay. “Four months?” - [Springing the Trap](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m3_chapter05/): Jay, in the passenger’s seat, unbuckled his seatbelt. “We’ve been over this. I’ll be fine.” He chewed his lower lip for a moment, then leaned across the centre console, reaching out to turn Sebastian’s face toward him. “We pull this off, and it’s all over. The job’s done.” - [Crisis Management](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m3_chapter04/): “She leaked it!” Jay snarled, without looking up from his phone. “She leaked her own fucking show!” - [The Approach](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m3_chapter03/): Jay owned exactly one suit, which he’d thought was fairly decent until he met Moran—who, at present, was locked into a disapproving orbit around Jay as he stood in front of the room’s full-length mirror, dressed in his shirt and trousers. - [Field Reconnaissance](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m3_chapter02/): They slid into one of the booths, heads bent close together. Jay stabbed a straw viciously through the lid of his tea and said, “I want to kill her. Can we kill her?” - [Crossed Paths](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m3_chapter01/): His appointment was booked for 4:30 PM. The receptionist had sternly told him not to be late. Jay proceeded to show up at 4:15, only to sit in the stuffy, overheated waiting room for the next forty-five minutes until they finally sent him to an examination room. There, he’d waited for another ten minutes before the doctor showed up. - [And Many Rabies Shots Ensued](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m2_epilogue/): The hospital had kept Sebastian a few days, pumping him full of vaccines and antibiotics and watching him like a lab rat. None of the doctors had treated a tiger mauling, and the fact that he’d spent a not-insubstantial amount of time lying in a ditch afterwards certainly didn’t help matters. Clearly, they’d decided not to take any chances. - [A Series of Spectacular Decisions](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m2_chapter05/): Derek Chapman’s plan to cut Moran out of the deal and sell the tiger himself had stalled on a logistical problem—namely, that Toby Wright’s van didn’t have a ramp. - [The Impounded Tiger](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m2_chapter04/): A security door marked the divide between the waiting room and the staff-only areas of the building; beyond it lay a maze of white-painted cinder block hallways, lined with animal pens. There was a dedicated wing for cats, another for dogs, and so on—but what drew Sebastian’s attention was the one marked “Dangerous Animals.” - [You Can’t Cheat an Honest Man](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m2_chapter03/): Derek Chapman was having an awful evening. He’d won a few seconds of the host’s time upon his arrival, but that had ended quickly as Clarke turned his attention toward the next guest to arrive. Now Chapman wandered the parlour, wine glass in hand, hovering at the edge of one conversation for a few minutes before moving on to the next. The other guests barely noticed him. - [Breaking and Entering](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m2_chapter02/): Instinct jolted him to full awareness, while years of military training had him reaching for the knife he’d stashed beneath the mattress—a nine-inch Bowie knife which was fantastically illegal to carry on the streets and therefore had to be kept in the house. Creeping silently through the flat to his front door, knife tucked close to his forearm in a reverse grip, he put his eye to the peephole. - [Six Weeks Later](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m2_chapter01/): The producers of Midnight Force: Sunset on the Sands had booked the Marigold Cinema for the film’s UK debut. It was a small, independent movie theatre in Soho that’d been around since the turn of the last century, its facade an eclectic mix of classical architecture and gaudy neon. - [Where We Left Off](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m2_prelude/): Jay clutched Sebastian’s hand, fingers laced tightly together, as he all but dragged the man back to his flat. Sebastian was more than happy to comply; the moment they were inside, he pulled Jay in for another long, heated kiss. - [The Blow-Off](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m1_chapter05/): A cab dropped Sir James Walter off at Heathrow’s charter terminal. A private jet waited for him on the tarmac, ready to fly him to Tenerife. His brisk walk to the plane was interrupted by the sound of someone shouting. - [The Hook](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m1_chapter04/): Walter fumbled for the door handle and staggered from the car. The front tire was a shredded mess of rubber, the grille dented from the car’s collision with a streetlamp. Sunlight glinted off something above. In a window overlooking the street, just barely visible between the curtains, was the sleek, dark shape of a rifle. - [The Set-Up](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m1_chapter03/): Jay glared up at him, and Sebastian couldn’t help but smile. He’d held a knife to this man’s throat not half an hour ago, and yet he had the brass not only to order Sebastian around, but to sass him in the process. - [Moriarty](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m1_chapter02/): Arthur Cadogan West, executive assistant, was accustomed to running errands with his employers after-hours. But Arthur Cadogan West was an identity that had been constructed only two weeks ago. Jay Moriarty, the man who’d constructed it, was about ready to stab his temporary “boss.” - [Moran](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/m1_chapter01/): Sir James Walter, CEO of Bruce-Partington Aerospace, arrived at the Bagatelle Club around 8:30 in the evening—half an hour late. In that half-hour, Sebastian Moran had successfully cheated the Bagatelle’s poker group out of nearly £600. ## Pages - [About](https://moriarty.inferiorwit.com/about/): Following his polite ejection from the SAS at the end of a decade-long military career, Captain Sebastian Moran is at loose ends.
